API and Service Design requires usage understanding, business requirements forecasting, and the ability to transform that knowledge into system design requirements and implement it. In addition to protocol knowledge (REST, JSON, XML, RPC) it is important to design the system for others to use, including good documentation, low latency or responses, proper services separation and client-server models.
